I felt a little sorry for Saint Dane at the end, but I can't say I was sorry to see him go. A lot of it hinges on whether or not there was any sincerity to his pleading, which I could believe either way.

I didn't really feel sorry for him, but I hated envisioning him bawling. I always thought of him as a BA, Darth Vader-esque villain. That end didn't really suit him IMO.

in my opinion the travelers should have and did hold him solely responsible but they should have let him live and become another spirit of good solara. Plus if they did that then DJ would have left it open for more books which is what every1 wants but with it over its a bitter sweet thing so theres my opinion and no i didnt feel sorry for him but i still think he should have been spared

QUOTE (soldiers*of*halla @ Sep 1 2009, 03:13 AM) *
Okay i just wanted to comment on your conversation about you thinking that saint dane was right at first, but became wrong. I actually had the opposite of that. At first, I thought sd was totally wrong. By the end of book 10, however, i almost started to agree with him. Not gonna lie.
I didn't fully agree with him of course, his methods were morally wrong, but I almost think that the philosophy was kind of right. I have been reading the books since they first came out, and at first i thought saint dan was completly and absolutely wrong. He was killing and being manipulative, but we didn't know what for exactly. We knew that there was some reason he was doing what he did, but didn't know that reason. So I disagreed with him because at that point, to us, he was just trying to destroy the territories for no reason. But once his final plan was clear, to eliminate the weak and unproductive and let the successful prosper, i agreed with it. I just disagreed with how he went about it. I honestly don't know of any other way to "eliminate the weak" other than killing. So that would be where I disagree with sd, because killing isn't justified by any means. But the successfull shouldn't have to "pull the weight" of the weak. It is wrong. The successful work extremely hard to get where they are, and shouldn't have to be held back be the people who just want to feed off their success to live. The successful should be rewarded for their excellence and not punished by having to support others, unless they do it by choice of course. But that is a different case. Then they aren't being forced to do anything, but have the choice to do what they want, which is much better.
I also disagree that peoples' paths should be laid out by one person, like sd thinks. He thinks people need guidance in the form of an all powerful ruler (himself). I disagree with that, people need to make their own choices and learn from their OWN mistakes.
So basically i agree with his philosophy, but I disagree with his methods. I dunno, just something to think about. I just found it interesting how you thought about sd's ways. Agreeing with him first, but then changing your mind. smile.gif

Sry, i dont agree. How could u agree with a philosophy that justifies crushing the normal ppl and only keeping the elite?! Unless of course, u r part of the elite. Then I understand perfectly.
Every democratic /human rights law states that EVERYONE is equal, not just the oh-so-mighty-elite. That everyone have equal oppurtunities no matter skin colour, religion or family.
Is that what u believe in? A Halla only 4 the rich and powerful like wat saint dane wants?
Btw dont be confused. Wat Sd means by not carrying the weight of the weak not only means not being forced to help those that r less fortunate or lack any talent, it means totally marginalizing them. So no, i don't agree with the vision.

I'm off topic.....*shakes his head* Ok......I Thought That in The End, He Really Gave Some point. I mean He caused Awareness To All The travelers. Maybe The Territories would have crumbled anyways? It would probably just have taken Some more time. saint Dane, In some ways helped........Whoa....................But Basically He just Screwed with peoples lives, And Got Tick'D off by Bobby..............yeah..............................

I did feel sorry for him at the end because he didn't do this out of simply sheer evil, he actually had an intention, believing it was correct. Being brought upon his knees made his seem like a good guy begging for mercy in my mind, but I quickly remembered all the bad things he did, all the people he killed, impacted, injured, wounded, and in some wayshapeorform inflicted pain. That pretty much changed my mind.

I impersonated the Merchant of Death...
I bombed the Lost City of Faar...
I incensed the Never War...
I rewired the Reality Bug...
I tried poisoning Black Water...
I withheld the Rivers of Zadaa...
I championed most of the Quillan Games...
I demolished the Pilgrims of Rayne...
I visioned the Raven Rise...
I battled the Soldiers of Halla.

I am Saint Dane.
